Again, I don’t think it’s worth beating around the bush here. I’m not convinced that there’s enough interest left in the game to sustain it through these difficult first months- or that I have the ability and energy needed to work it up- and, subsequently, I’m making the decision to close the game. This is in effect as of now. If you’d like to hear my reasoning beyond that, I’d be happy to talk about it but I think I should just be as brief as possible here.

You’ve all been wonderful players and I’ve enjoyed playing with you and I’m sorry for how suddenly this all collapsed. As Claire mentioned before, this was always a bit of an experiment for us and, unfortunately, it didn’t go quite as we planned it to.

Thank you for being as patient and understanding as you have been and I hope we bump into each other again in the future.

Okay, so here's how things are panning out.

Right now, Rachel and I (aka, the mod team!) are starting to wonder if this game really has legs. This absolutely isn't a slight against any of you lot- you're all really lovely and have made it worth running the game so far! But the Night Terrors event has been up for just about a week and is pretty much a dead zone right now, and given that this is a plot heavy game that requires a fair amount of participation to make the most of it that's flagging up a few warning signs for us- if this is us in our first month, how are things going to be further down the line, when participation is really going to count? It might seem premature to start making calls, but this event was scheduled to finish on July 27th and, given the pace of the game thus far, we're not really sure that bodes well. On top of that, we have very few reserves and even fewer apps, which means that it seems unlikely that any new blood will be significantly livening things up any time soon. The fact is, we're not entirely sure that so few characters can really sustain the plot.

Ultimately, this game was always going to be an experiment- running a memory loss game that also involved AUs that was also a prose game was risky from the start- and some experiments just don't pay off. We wanted to do a lot with this game, and maybe we were just overly ambitious with what could be achieved. While Aungier was designed to be fairly slow, between the plotting, events, day changes and general day to day stuff, it does take a lot of work and energy to mod, and if your interest is waning we'd really like to know so we can call it quits gracefully rather than waste everyone's time by dragging it out. As it is now, we feel like we're putting a lot in without anyone really responding to it- which itself says a lot about whether or not people are actually enjoying themselves, which is the whole point of playing in the first place. If the game isn't working, things aren't interesting or we aren't giving you enough to do, I'm not sure if we'd know how to remedy that in the future.

At present, our feeling is that we should bow out now while things are in the early stages. Your honesty would be hugely appreciated, and don't feel bad at all about being brutal. There's probably a lot we could have done differently, and some things just don't work out! ♥

EDIT: This is the Head Mod (Claire) here. The long and the short of it is, I'm going to be stepping down. I'll post a comment below explaining myself, apologising profusely and outlining what's going to happen. I'm really sorry for being such a useless mod. You all deserved better.

Hello!

I am very much interested in apping another character to Aungier after this event is done, but I'm having a little bit of trouble deciding. This is a small game (which I like, very much) so I thought I'd ask the group if any of these characters interest them.

I am generally an OC player, so that's what they all are. There's quite a few, but I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone has to offer.

We promised you event information earlier this week- and here it is! Introducing...

The Night Terrors Event

Something is growing in Aungier House. Long after the household was driven to an early night, the cause of the drowsy humidity began to spread its filaments in the darkness once the threat of sunlight vanished- and when everyone is inevitably frightened awake after midnight, they’ll finally see just what it is.

and your mind is moving low )

Also! Given that the event will take place at night and the early hours of November 4th in game), we still haven’t decided on whether we should extend the ‘day’ and the aftermath into the next week. If we did, this in-game day would essentially last for two and a half weeks. What would you all prefer? If you’d rather just move on, we could also have a clause that says that staying up all night and residual spores from the fungus were enough to have most people sleep through to the next day, with the option of staying awake if you really want to. And feel free to ask any questions you may have, too.

Hi! This is just a short update on what's been going down: we messed up. We were unclear with players and with each other on what was and wasn't acceptable in AU histories and ended up applying uneven standards to apps- which resulted in confusion and upset for our players. We're a new game working through an untested game mechanic and none of us have ever modded before, and so weren't really sure what people were going to throw at us. That doesn't excuse the mistakes we've made, but we're all committed to learning from them and not making them again.

Thank you all for your patience with us, and please don't forget that you can always come to the mods, either via our personal contact or the concerns page, where all comments are screened.

As you may have already noticed, the day just changed in the main community with a few things worth noting for the day.

First of all, the house currently feels unbearably humid. The day is already very close, but due to the cold weather Lady Valdemar will complain whenever she comes across an open window. Secondly, throughout the day, characters may start to feel increasingly sleepy or tired; by the end of the day, servants are likely to be dead on their feet. For characters who don't live or work in the house itself, the effects will be less pronounced but still noticeable.

Thirdly and most importantly- the matter of the broken automaton! Today, one of Lady Valdemar's three automata will be found malfunctioning in the house; this leaves room for anyone who wants to find and interact with it to do so, but more to the point it also means that characters with the right expertise will be asked to repair it, or to sit in on the job. We'll be putting up a log for characters to get involved soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

And, finally, as a reminder: there's an event coming up for the next IC day, which we'll be addressing around the weekend. If you have any questions, drop them here! We'll get to them ASAP.

Hey, everyone! I'm Rachel, one of your co-mods and now also a player! My plurk is [plurk.com profile] crescendoll and jsyk I'm going back through and adding everyone here but you can also PM me either at this journal or my other journal ([personal profile] gingitsune ) too.

I'll be bringing Robin Mask from Kinnikuman into the game as the half-brother of the Master. In his OU, he's a wrestling nobleman who acts as something of the tactician and father of the group and has a variety of nicknames, most of which start or end with the words "gentleman" and "professor".

In his AU, he's a disgraced military prodigy, now retired and living at Aungier House until he can rebuild his life... which he has made no attempt to start doing yet. If you're looking for war stories, however, you might have to pester him a little bit because he's not exactly a fan of talking about it and has several trunks of his old medals and uniforms locked away in storage because he doesn't like looking at them. Other than being very jaded and worn down, he's more or less the same man personality-wise and if you're looking for someone to chat to about literature or history, he probably won't shut up.

OH and also, he's not actually blue. The anime gives him a blue bodysuit for some bizarre reason and obviously he won't be wearing his mask so there's some reference for what he actually looks like on his profile.

Anyway, if you're interested there's more on his app here but I'm looking forward to finally being able to play with you all!

Hello! I'm Elizabeth, or just E, and I am bringing you one suspiciously young-looking Master! I'm in the EST time zone, but I tend to be around at erratic hours. My plurk is [plurk.com profile] detectivefiction; I can also be reached via PM to this journal.

This is L from Death Note. In canon, he's a detective who began his career as a child prodigy and has attained a massive level of international credibility--a very smart young man with an inquisitive, intrusive, demanding bent. He's 25 at his canon point, but has the experience and success of someone twice his age, and no personal life to speak of.

"L" will be explained in the AU as a nickname for his "name," Daniel, which I'm assuming almost nobody ever uses (he'd be Mr. Valdemar, L, or the Master to most people, depending on their level of supposed intimacy). Robin Mask is his AU younger brother: L's inclinations were cerebral, while Robin's were military. I'm presuming that since no one is yet playing The Mistress, she's "away on a trip." His app and remaining AU background are here. He will be inhaling fruit tarts faster than the kitchen can make them.

Also, a major difference from canon for now is that his posture will be unusually good in comparison to how terrible it is in canon. You'll see his characteristic slouch return as his memories do.

I have a comment up in the chapel log, but because it's now very late in the week, he'll also have some kind of relatively open post on the next IC day. Characters who have household business might prefer to speak to him in his study when that rolls around.

A note: while the type of profiling L does in canon is not feasible in 1888 because the psychological theories behind it are either new, developing, or not yet existent, and while the Master also has no reason to be a legit profiler, L is going to be an extremely sharp and perceptive character in any AU.

I know that there are other players who need for their characters to have successfully kept certain major secrets, and I've tried to think of ways to make that possible and believable for both of us (some factors that help: he travels a lot, he's very busy when he's not traveling, he doesn't have the final say in the household, etc). His more formal profiling abilities will eventually return with his memories, but as he realizes that he's not actually Mr. Valdemar, he'll also lose any pretense of personal interest in most other characters' affairs and will be trying to direct himself more towards the metaplot mystery. Still, fire away if you have questions, etc!

ETA: Also fire away if you'd like to discuss other aspects of his current relationship with your character! For example, I'm assuming that he generally likes the research assistants but can be hard on them, that he finds Lyall reliable, and so on.

Now that there are a few players kicking around and starting to settle in, I thought we should start to get a little more of your input regarding the manor since it's your characters that will be inhabiting it. As you probably all know by now, we have a separate page for descriptions which you can find here. What I'd like are some descriptions regarding your characters' rooms.

For example, if your character is one of the children, you can pick one of the bedrooms and write a short description for it and I'll put it on the Descriptions page for everyone's reference. Characters in roles such as the governess and tutor can also have a say in how they arrange the schoolrooms and servants can add a little personal detail (do they have letters from home or any small trinkets and so on?) to whatever bedroom they're staying in in the appropriate quarters, etc. This applies to rooms that characters have control over themselves and therefore does not extend to rooms such as the library and dining room but, if you're not sure whether you're allowed to customise a room or have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

This isn't compulsory but I think it would add a level of interactivity with the setting whilst also helping to realise the house for anyone looking for references.

You can either comment here or, if you'd prefer, send a PM!

Hey guys!

I'm Gil, and I'm bringing in this cutie. He's actually a Nation, Finland, from that anime/manga/webcomic that everyone hates, but for now he thinks he's Timo Väinämöinen, bastard son of a Finnish noble.  He comes complete with a bastard son of his own - who isn't actually his, but no one except him knows that yet.  He's been around for a while as a research assistant, but his English is still far from perfect.

As a heads up, I'm actually in the middle of buying a house so I'm going to be pretty sparse immediately.  We should be swapping the keys on friday, and then it's just down to how long it takes me to get the internet working.  Once that's done, I"m GMT, but work evenings, so I'm normally around during the day and for a couple of hours into the early morning.  Feel free to add me on plurk on [plurk.com profile] purplefluffychainsaw. It's normally the best way to get hold of me.

Edit: Actually, I have a question. Does anyone's character speak Russian? /edit end

I'm bringing into the game the probably youngest (looking) character yet, six year old Ivan. ...Who actually is a couple of centuries old, being what will once become the nation of Russia and all.

At the moment, he believes himself to be Ivan Timoevich Braginsky, bastard of two noble families with mostly Russian blood. Despite his name implying that, Timo isn't the one who sired him, it's one of Timo's half-brothers. Ivan doesn't know that, though. Long story short, the families of his parents decided to claim that he was Timo's to get rid of both of them, and that is why he's now at the Valdemar estate: To be with his "father" and for both of them to be far away from the place where their existence might prove problematic. He's ...odd. At first glance, he'll probably just seem shy and curious, but he has a lot of unsettling sides. He only arrived at the estate a few hours before the game started and is still investigating the house, so feel free to never have seen the little boy before. Considering that he actually resembles Timo in a few ways (eye colour, hair colour, skin tone), it shouldn't be too far-fetched to see a resemblance, even if the child's nose is definitely more impressive than Timo's. But that's his mother's blood, right?

Actually, he is the Grand Duchy of Moscow, an eastern European nation currently under the rule of the aftermath of the mongol invasions of the continent (and not related with "Timo", aka Finland, at all). He's had a pretty shitty childhood, worse than his AU one if you think about it, and that has contorted his worldview and behavioural patterns somewhat. He does have two sisters that are dear to him, however, and remembering them will probably be the only nice memory regain that he'll ever get.

About me: I'm Kira, live in CET and am an university student, so my hours are all over the place and I'm basically never on during American prime tagging time. But I backtag forever, and almost never drop a thread, so there's that?

Hi there! I'm Fox, and it's nice to meet you. I'm bringing in this guy, here, Kiritsugu Emiya, the protagonist of Fate/Zero. As you can probably guess from his username, he's not the most successful protagonist, however. In fact, he fails to accomplish any of his goals, and he comes from a canon point after his failure, shortly before his death.

A few things about his canon self. He's in his thirties, a widower, a father of two. He used to be a magus, but he has lost all his powers, as he is suffering from a terrible, painful curse that is slowly killing him. He's done a lot of questionable things in his past, including but not limited to murder, torture, and destruction of public property. It was all for the greater good, but he regrets his actions and is trying to live out the remainder of his life peacefully.

As you can read in his AU History, at Aungier House, he is the head gamekeeper and has been so for years. If your character spends any time in the woods or out on the moors, they may well come across him rambling about with his guns, hunting for poachers. He's something of an aloof, eccentric figure, but a kind person. Those who know him call him Kerry.

I am [plurk.com profile] teacuppity on Plurk, and feel free to add me! I look forward to playing with you all.

Hello!

My name is Vee. I am 23 years old, I live about half an hour south of Chicago which puts me in CST time, despite the fact that the rest of Indiana is on several different time zones.

I am bringing to the game an original character of mine named Catherine Mary Saint Croix. 9 times out of 10, I will only call her "Mary." Her OU is actually a few years earlier than Aungier, 1799, so it was actually pretty easy for me to bring her in almost verbatim. Almost.
OU: Sacrificed her baby to Satan and became his bride, gave birth to the Antichrist, kills a lot of people over hundreds of years.

AU: Sacrificed her baby and had the deed blamed on someone else. Has suppressed the memory out of motherly guilt and has been living with family in England "for her health" and only recently come to work as governess for the Valdemars.
Either way, she's batshit crazy. But in Aungier, her suppressed memories will allow her to pretend to be lucid for the time being. There are content warnings at the top of her application in red, if you want to read it.

I am at an IT desk all day long, which means that I mostly tag during the work week at my desk. Honestly, I rarely tag on the weekends these days, especially not now that my home computer is on the fritz.

My plurk is [plurk.com profile] blizzardseason and I would be happy to add anyone.

First off: hello everyone, and welcome to Aungier! I hope you all have a fantastic stay here. More importantly, though, this is a post to officially declare the game

OPEN

To start us off, an official mod post for the day has been posted in the main community here. These will go up weekly as flavour text to describe the general state of the house, the weather and the NPCs in it for your own posts, as well as to declare the official day changeover. As you may have seen from the Game Calendar, this first in-game day will be longer than most to allow for settling in, stray apps and getting to know your fellow players and won't be changing over until July 10th.

continued )

With all of that out of the way, though, go ahead and get tagging around! Feel free to use this post to ask questions.

Hi, my name is lotus-genie and I'm bringing you this guy. Lancer from Fate/Prototype. In his AU history, he's Misaya's manservant and loyal dog. He's usually friendly enough, but when you add in his mistress Misaya, it becomes a whole other kettle of fish.

Because of things in his AU history, I have a permissions/opt out post here.

Heyyyy Aungier! My name is Nyx, and can I just say I'm really excited to be here? Because I'm really excited to be here. I can't wait for this game, ahhhhh

The character I'm bringing in is Misaya Reiroukan from Fate/Prototype. As you can read about in her AU history, Misaya is one of the Valdemar children. She is both incredibly bright and incredibly ruthless, aggressively pursuing education and a number of hobbies that are just not ladylike! Also, she thinks she is Better Than You and if you're part of the staff, she probably won't even look at you like you're human. Sorry about that.

That being said, Misaya is kind of the worst person. She is a sadist that enjoys inflicting pain and thinks blood and gore is ~elegant~ and ~beautiful~, and also she has coerced a servant into a (secret) physical relationship with her. Like, literally coerced, using the power imbalance between master and servant to force him into it. As such, she has a permissions post here, so if you have any squicks related to the above, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know!

If you need to get in contact with me for any reason, I am reachable by Plurk @ [plurk.com profile] missbiondetta, AIM @ gilded chrysanth, and PM.

Hey everyone! I'm Ireny, and I'll be bringing in Temeraire, from the series of the same name! He hails from an AU of our world where dragons are a thing and function as sentient ships for most countries in the early 19th century. Temeraire himself is a Chinese dragon who was supposed to be sent as a gift to Napoleon Bonaparte (it's a long story), but the French ship carrying his egg was captured by an English frigate and he ended up hatching and imprinting on the captain of the frigate instead, at which point both dragon and captain were more-or-less drafted into the Royal Aerial Corps.

So, you know, the Napoleonic wars. With dragons.

In this AU, he's a (decidedly human) Chinese student who arrived in Yorkshire a few months ago to study aeroplane design under the Master of Aungier House. He's talkative, friendly, and still acclimatizing to England, so will have plenty of reason to interrogate (or have interrogated) your character about anything and everything he finds curious. You can also expect him to enthusiastically take up the banner of whatever radical cause catches his eye. I'm always up for working out previous CR, so feel free to hit me up over at [plurk.com profile] simplyirenic!

So yeah, that's about it! I'm looking forward to RPing with all of you! :D

Hello, everyone! My name's Airdra, and I'm really excited to be here!

I'm bringing this guy, Shirogane, from the tokusatsu series Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger. If you've ever seen Power Rangers Wild Force, it's pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of Gaoranger, with a very few changes here and there. To make a long story short, Shirogane is a Gao Warrior from the Heian Era who fought against monsters known as Orgs. Things got really bad, and he used a cursed mask to give himself a boatload more power...at the cost of turning into an Org himself. He was sealed away for a thousand years, went crazy wolf Org monster on everyone for a while, but was eventually returned back to normal by the present-day Gaorangers. He's big into being a lone wolf and fighting monsters to protect the Earth.

In this AU, he's a guy named Tsukumaro Oogami(Shirogane's just a canon nickname used more than his real name anyway) who found he was rather talented when it came to various forms of gambling, particularly billiards. He tried to use this to make his fortune, but he got cocky, started cheating rich people, got caught, and landed his butt in jail for five years. When he got out, he decided to try to make an honest living. Between a name change to Shirogane (but your character can call him Silver if the foreign name is too much) and moving far away from wherever it was he got arrested, he thinks he's distanced himself from his past and has a fresh start with a new job as a footman.

At least, he thinks he's managed to distance himself from his past deeds. I'm perfectly cool with his not being successful with that as he could have been, if your character once had an encounter with a charming young gambler.

I think that's it, and I look forward to playing with you all! If you need to reach me, I'm usually on Plurk at [plurk.com profile] Airdra.

I'm breaking in the comm with the first intro post! Pretty cool, yes? I hope so, anyway :: grins ::

Anyway, hiya, my name is Gail :) I'm an accounting clerk at a software company and I do some IT stuff on the side, as corporate siphons off bits and pieces of that part of my job. I live alone in a two-bedroom condo in Southern California with my three cats (one of whom is a demon).

My character here is, sadly, not the Fifth Doctor, that's just who his PB is, who I actually chose before I knew who he was. Whoops! He is instead Professor Randolph Lyall, a dapper, polite, and generally unobtrusive Victorian werewolf from the Parasol Protectorate books. I recommend them all to anyone who likes snarky heroines, lots of inclusive characters, and steampunk, vampires, and/or werewolves. Seriously great books. Lyall is Beta to the largest pack in London, and his history is, obviously, full of spoilers for the books.

In Aungier House, he's the head butler. So he's into everyone's business, handling all the little details, collecting lists for the Lady to approve, assigning guest rooms, all that fun running-the-servants-ragged stuff :D So he also likely knows all your characters at least superficially if not pretty well... anybody wanna work out previous "imaginary CR" for the false memories? ^^

Either way, I am seriously looking forward to this game opening, and I wanna throw my wolfie at EVERYONE.

ETA: Forgot to say, he has a funny quirk that he... smells really well. Not supernatural or anything, just for a human, but it's noticeable and he at times relies on it. So feel free to have your character make wisecracks about Lyall and his nose ;) I know how household staffs can get with funny quirks...

Applications and Role Discussion

Hello everyone! During every app cycle, we've decided to open up a post in which all potential applicants can ask for suggestions, advice or partners with whom you could write interlinked AUs. For those planning to app into a role with lots of connections (such as a family member), it might also be helpful to become acquainted with who you'll be playing with and the kind of thing their AU history might contain.

It's also good for drumming up excitement!

This is not compulsory and posting here will not guarantee that you or your character's AU history will be accepted, but it may make things easier for you to write or give you some fresh ideas if you aren't sure where to start. It may also help pre-emptively iron out any problems that you might otherwise be asked for revisions on.

You might like to post who you're planning on apping, what role(s) you're considering and what sort of history you're thinking of giving them, as well as any questions you have for other players (potential or otherwise). Feel free to chat amongst yourselves and share ideas- and please try to keep things pleasant! We'll be keeping an eye on things just in case.

As a reminder, reserves are open and apps open June 24th!
